FROM COTTAGE TO CRAFTSMAN
Armed only with a few inspiration photos and a draftsman’s rough set of plans with no detail, JWC was asked by the owner to transform a 1500 SF cottage into a 3000 SF, 2-story home with a Craftsman feel despite the large proportion of the structure. A spacious and sheltered entry porch with tongue-and-groove hardwood decking leads to a handsome mahogany front door. This is followed by a parlor and great room with 24′ ceilings and an oak staircase which Jon personally built by hand and which anchors the center of the home. Jon and the owner worked together to design all of the interior and exterior detailing including the broad eaves, stepped out-lookers, double rafter tails, dentil moulding, the porch and railings, the column, trim and tile details and even a 200-lb stone fireplace mantle which appears to float out of the living room wall. Upon completion of the second story addition, a view of Mission Bay and Tecolote Canyon dramatically enlarged the owner’s vista and provided a new perspective for the Craftsman style.
